Coir pith is derived from the coir husk, a spongy material which is an excellent form of natural manure having extremely high water retention properties. It is used as a replacement for traditional peat in soil mixtures, or, as a soil-less substrate for plant cultivation.
It improves the water holding capacity (more than 5 times its dry weight) contributing towards increased soil moisture. Composted LEO PLUS contains all plant nutrient elements and it can provide a supplemental effect along with inorganic fertilizers. There is improvement in cation exchange capacity of soils, where composted coir pith is applied. Ammonification, nitrification and nitrogen fixation are increased due to improved microbiological activity.
